15.2

"Good sons, take refuge completely in all the Buddhas in such worlds, and likewise take refuge completely in all the assemblies of those bodhisattva-mahāsattvas!"

15.3

At that time, the bhikṣus addressed the Buddha, saying: "Bhagavat, are the life spans of all such Buddha-Tathāgatas equal in length or not?"

15.4

The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Listen closely! I shall explain it for you. Bhikṣus! One kalpa in this Sahā World of mine, the land of the Buddha Śākyamuni in the Bhadrakalpa, is one day and one night in the world of Sukhāvatī.

15.5

"One kalpa in the world of Sukhāvatī, the land of the Buddha Amitābha, is one day and one night in the world of Kāṣāyadhvaja, the land of the Buddha Vajrasaṃghāta.

15.6

"One kalpa in the world of Kāṣāyadhvaja is one day and one night in the world of Avinivartanīyacakraghoṣa, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Suvikrāntaprabhāsapadmavikramin.

15.7

"One kalpa in the world of Avinivartanīyacakraghoṣa is one day and one night in the world of Vimalā, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Dharmadhvaja.

15.8

"One kalpa in the world of Vimalā is one day and one night in the world of Supradīpa, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Siṃha.

15.9

"One kalpa in the world of Supradīpa is one day and one night in the world of Suprabhāsa, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Vairocanagarbha.

15.10

"One kalpa in the world of Suprabhāsa is one day and one night in the world of Duratikramā, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Dharmaprabhāsapadmavikramin.

15.11

"One kalpa in the world of Duratikramā is one day and one night in the world of Alaṃkṛtamati, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Sarvābhiñjāprabhāsa.

15.12

"One kalpa in the world of Alaṃkṛtamati is one day and one night in the world of Ādarśamaṇḍalaprabhā, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Candramati.

15.13

"Bhikṣus! Proceeding in this count through more than ten asaṃkhyeyas of hundreds of thousands of ten millions of worlds, [one kalpa in the next-to-last world] is one day and one night in the final world, Padmavijayā, the Buddha-land of the Tathāgata Bhadravijaya.

15.14

"Bhikṣus! Such worlds are immeasurable and boundless, and unequal in their lengths; so too is the duration of the life spans of the Buddha-Tathāgatas residing in the world.

15.15

"Bhikṣus! You should recite the names of the Buddhas (in the Indian manuscript, from here below, all had the names of the worlds; here they are omitted) and speak thus:

15.21

"Take refuge in all such immeasurable and boundless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the worlds of the ten directions!

15.22

"Reverently pay homage to all the worthy and noble śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas:

15.23

"Namo to the Venerable Pūrṇamaitrāyaṇīputra! Namo to the Venerable Vigatāvaraṇa! Namo to the Venerable Galābhiṣikta! Namo to the Venerable Dṛḍhadama! Namo to the Venerable Mukharāja! Namo to the Venerable Vicitrāgata! Namo to the Venerable Maitraprakṛti! Namo to the Venerable Nandipramoda! Namo to the Venerable Svāgata! Namo to the Venerable Rāhula!

15.24

"Take refuge in all such widely renowned great arhats!

15.25

"Having paid homage to the Three Jewels, next perform kṣamā again.

15.26

"We disciples! Having already repented of all karmic retributions, should now again comprehensively repent of all sins, earnestly imploring the Buddhas of the ten directions to protect and deliver us disciples. From beginningless time through immeasurable hundreds of thousands of ten millions of kalpas until now, we have committed evil deeds beyond full description: whether committing the ten evil acts, or committing the five heinous sins, as well as slandering the Vaipulya sūtras, or committing immeasurable asaṃkhyeya sins. Now we take refuge in the Buddhas of the ten directions, take refuge in the Dharma of the ten directions, and take refuge in the Saṅgha of the ten directions.

15.27

"Next, we again take refuge and bow our heads to the Buddha Akṣobhya of the east, the Buddha Ratnaketu of the south, the Buddha Amitābha of the west, the Buddha Supravijaya of the north, the Tathāgata Gandhahastin of the zenith, and the Buddha Koṭipratibimba of the nadir.

15.28

"We bow our heads to the Great Being Samantabhadra of the east, the Great Being Vasuṃdhara of the south, the Great Being Avalokiteśvara of the west, the Great Being Pūrṇacandra of the north, the Great Being Ākāśa of the zenith, the Great Being Dṛḍhaguṇa of the nadir, our original teacher Śākyamuni Buddha, and take refuge in the future Buddha-nature!"

15.29

"Furthermore, I bow my head to the emanated transformation buddhas of other regions, and to the mahāsattvas Vimalakīrti and Mañjuśrī.

15.30

"I also bow my head to Ānanda, Kāśyapa, and the noble beings who have manifested the four paths.

15.31

"I also pay homage to those of initial mind in receiving the teachings, bow my head to the Great Canon's twelve divisions of scriptures, to the other Mahāyāna scriptures and correct canons, and to the eight portions of relics and the images.

15.32

"I also pay homage to the presently existing Buddha-activities; the Heavenly Kings of the four quarters; Śakra, Brahmā, and the thirty-three devas of Trāyastriṃśa; and all the divine ṛṣis in the sky, in the heavens, upon the earth, beneath the earth, and in the mountains, forests, and under trees. May those who possess great supernatural powers, those who possess the divine eye, and those who possess the divine ear deign to hear and know this, and all serve as witnesses. May all sentient beings, if they have not yet repented, upon obtaining this repentance have all their sins extinguished. We, disciples, today repent, laying bare our liver and exposing our gall, and with utmost sincerity take refuge in the Buddha!

15.33

"Namo to the Buddha Immovable Wisdom of the eastern direction; namo to the Buddha Light of the Sun and Moon Lamps of the southern direction; namo to the Buddha Exceedingly Supreme of the western direction; namo to the Buddha King of Abundant and Stern Inherent Virtue of the northern direction; namo to the Buddha Accomplished Chief of the south-eastern direction; namo to the Buddha Jeweled Illumination of the Void of the south-western direction; namo to the Buddha Free of Fear upon Seeing of the north-western direction; namo to the Buddha Lion's Strength of the north-eastern direction; namo to the Buddha Severing Doubt, Uprooting Desire, and Dispelling Darkness of the nadir; namo to the Buddha Golden Jewel Radiance of the zenith.

15.34

"Namas to all such Triratna throughout the ten directions to the ends of the sphere of space.

15.35

"We, disciples, from beginningless worlds up to the present, in this evil body, with mad, deluded, and agitated minds, have accumulated immeasurable perverse views, defilements, and evil karma beyond full description; we have committed numerous offenses without being aware or conscious of them; our evil minds have raged fiercely, heedless of future existences. Seeing only the present, we took pleasure in practicing defilements and distanced ourselves from wholesome roots; obstructed by evil karma, we drew close to bad spiritual associates; or we committed unprincipled deeds in the presence of bhikṣus, committed unprincipled deeds in the presence of bhikṣuṇīs, committed unprincipled deeds in the presence of our parents, or committed unprincipled deeds before the great assembly.

15.36

"Or we willfully appropriated the saṅgha's garland goods; or stirred up right and wrong regarding the five divisions of the saṅgha; or spoke of immeasurable evil fruits in the world; or killed sentient beings who possessed the wholesome roots for bodhi; or slandered Dharma masters; or declared what is Dharma to be non-Dharma, and declared what is non-Dharma to be Dharma. We claimed that the Tathāgata is impermanent, that the true Dharma is impermanent, and that the Saṅgha-jewel is impermanent; we took no pleasure in charitable giving and faithfully accepted heterodox teachings. Offenses such as these are immeasurable and boundless. Therefore, today, with immeasurable terror and immeasurable shame, we take refuge in the Triratna, the compassionate Buddhas, the Mahāyāna parents, and the bodhisattva spiritual associates; may you grant that we today disclose and repent them!

15.37

"We, disciples, from immeasurable kalpas until now, have committed the five heinous sins; or broken the prohibitive precepts of the Buddhas of the past, future, and present; or engaged in the behavior of icchantikas; or uttered coarse words slandering the true Dharma, committing such heavy karma without ever reforming or repenting, devoid of shame in our minds. Or we committed offenses such as the ten evil deeds, knowing ourselves that we definitely committed such grave matters, yet from the beginning our minds were devoid of fear and shame; we silently accepted offerings and never disclosed [our faults]; regarding that true Dharma, we had no mind to protect, cherish, and establish it, but in the meantime disparaged and belittled it, speaking many transgressive evils. Or we claimed that there is no Buddha, Dharma, or Saṅgha; or did not believe that there are hells where retribution is undergone. Offenses such as these are immeasurable and boundless. Today, with immeasurable terror and immeasurable shame, we take refuge in the Triratna, the compassionate Buddhas, the Mahāyāna parents, and the bodhisattva spiritual associates; may you grant that we disclose and repent them!

15.38

"We, disciples, from immeasurable kalpas until today, either through the four inverted views spoke of the four parājikas as sthūlātyayas, or spoke of sthūlātyaya offenses as the four parājikas; spoke of transgressions as non-transgressions, and non-transgressions as transgressions; spoke of light offenses as heavy, and heavy offenses as light; viewed the pure as impure, and viewed the impure as pure. Or through wrong views, we praised and expounded worldly treatises without revering the Buddhist scriptures, engaged in all kinds of evil disputation, kept the eight impure things, regarded what is truly the Buddha's word as Māra's word, and regarded what is truly Māra's word as the Buddha's word. Or we believed and accepted what the six teachers spoke, or said: 'The Tathāgata has today already entered nirvāṇa, and the Triratna is impermanent.' Our bodies and minds gave rise to confusion and immeasurable perverse views.

15.39

"Therefore, today, with immeasurable terror and immeasurable shame, we take refuge in the Triratna, the compassionate Buddhas, the Mahāyāna parents, and the bodhisattva spiritual associates; may you grant that we disclose and repent them!

15.40

"May we, disciples, relying on the merit generated by this repentance, vow in lifetime after lifetime to rescue all sentient beings of the ten directions, causing them to stay far away from the ten evil deeds and practice the ten virtues, to bring all their sufferings to a cessation, and to cause an inconceivable, asaṃkhyeya multitude to dwell in the ten bhūmis. Whatever wholesome dharmas exist in this land and in other worlds, we dedicate them entirely. By the bodily, verbal, and mental wholesome deeds I have cultivated, I vow in future lives to realize the unexcelled path; I vow that all women will become men, fully endowed with wisdom, diligent and unflagging, all walking the Bodhisattva path and diligently cultivating and accumulating the six pāramitās.

15.41

"Whatever various wondrous merits have been performed by all sentient beings in this Jambudvīpa, elsewhere, and in immeasurable worlds, I now rejoice in them from the depths of my heart. By means of this merit of rejoicing, and the wholesome deeds performed through my body, speech, and mind, I vow in future lives to attain the unexcelled path, to obtain a pure, undefiled, and auspicious fruition, and to fully complete the Tathāgata's correct enlightenment."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra on the Questions and Answers of Baoda on the Retribution of Śramaṇas

15.43

Baoda shortly afterward moved forward and entered a hell of burning bodies. Why is it named the Hell of Burning Bodies? In that hell, fifty yojanas in length and breadth, iron walls surround it on all sides, and fierce fire and soaring flames come to burn the sinners; within the sinners' bodies, fire also burns, and smoke and fire burst forth together from the sinners' pores.

15.44

Within the eastern gate, there were eight hundred sinners who came entering it, crying out with loud voices and beating their whole bodies: 'What sin have we committed today that we have come and entered this place?'

15.45

A horse-headed rākṣasa, holding a three-pronged iron fork in his hand, thrust it toward their backs so that it emerged from their chests; when they came and entered into it, fire was burning on the ground, and within their bodies fire likewise burned, flames flowing forth from their six sense faculties; through a day and a night they suffered immeasurable punishments, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it.

15.46

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, 'What kinds of sins did these śramaṇas commit to undergo such suffering?'

15.47

The rākṣasa answered, 'These śramaṇas, whether as teachers or as disciples, were not compliant with one another: the teachers were not compassionate to their disciples, and the disciples did not respect their teachers. Each harbored resentment toward the other, shouting in loud voices, glaring with angry eyes and wrangling with each other, until hatred and enmity arose, and they fell into this hell. Emerging from this hell, they will encounter each other lifetime after lifetime and constantly kill one another.'

15.48

Baoda, having heard this, wept sorrowfully and departed.
