"Disciples, from anādikāla until today, [we have committed] false speech, double-tongued speech, harsh speech, and frivolous speech; spoken of emptiness as existence, and spoken of existence as emptiness; said we saw what was not seen, and said we did not see what was seen; said we heard what was not heard, and said we did not hear what was heard; said we knew what was not known, and said we did not know what was known; deceived the worthy and hoodwinked the sagely, our words and actions contradicting each other; praised ourselves as having attained superhuman qualities—[claiming] 'I have attained the four dhyānas, the four formless attainments, the sixteen aspects of ānāpāna contemplation, and from srotāpanna up to arhat; I have attained pratyekabuddha and the non-retrogressing bodhisattva state; devas have come, nāgas have come, ghosts have come, spirits have come, and whirlwinds and earth ghosts have all arrived at my dwelling; they asked and I answered'—displaying wonders to delude the masses and seek worldly fame and profit. Sins such as these are limitless and boundless; today we disclose them, taking refuge and making kṣamā.
