"Furthermore, disciples, from anādikāla until today, [we have] perhaps stirred up discord with slanderous words, instigating both sides against each other; engaged in double-tongued framing, trafficking in idle gossip, speaking of that side to this side and leading that side about this side, alienating others' families, ruining others' marriages and kindred, and wearing down others with gossip. We have spoken of people's faults and ruined others' good friendships, making intimate friends grow distant and old acquaintances become enemies. Or we have engaged in frivolous speech that was untrue, words failing to reach righteousness; slandered sovereign and father, depreciated teachers and elders, destroyed the loyal and good, eclipsed those superior to ourselves, acted as go-betweens for two countries stirring up intrigue between them; engaged in superficial flattery and hollow cleverness, constantly uttering falsehoods, professing one thing outwardly while thinking another inwardly along manifold paths; praising someone to their face while reviling them behind their back; recited and chanted heterodox texts, and transmitted heterodox, evil teachings. Or [we have used] harsh speech, cursing and abusing with coarse words, or invoked Heaven, pointed to the Earth, and called upon ghosts and spirits. The various sins born of such vocal karma are limitless and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the sagely saṅgha, we take refuge and make kṣamā.
