"There was a devaputra named Manojña. Seeing that grass growing from the earth pierced the Bodhisattva's flesh and grew up to his elbow, he said to the devas: 'How extraordinary is this man! Such ascetic practice! Having not eaten for a long time, he does not hear our cries, and is unaware of the grass growing through him.' He then extended the white hair with his right hand; the hair was straight and true, exactly one zhang, four chi, and five cun long, like a heavenly white jewel, hollow within and without. The devas saw hundreds of millions of rays of light within the hair, its light so subtle and wondrous that it cannot be fully described. Within that light appeared transformation Bodhisattvas, all practicing austerities without any difference from this; the Bodhisattvas were not small, nor was the hair large. Seeing this, the devas marveled at what was unprecedented, and immediately released the white hair, which, curling gracefully to the right, returned to its original place along with the light.
