"At that time, the sinners immediately say these words: 'Why is there no fine city wall or pleasant mountain forest here for me to roam and enjoy, leaving me instead amidst such impure things?' Having spoken these words, the rākṣasa hell-wardens lift up the Avīci hell and the various sword forests with great iron pitchforks, transforming them into jeweled trees and cool pools; the flames transform into gold-leaved lotus flowers, the iron-beaked insects transform into wild ducks and geese, and the painful cries of the hells sound like songs and hymns. Hearing them, the sinners say: 'In such a pleasant place I shall roam!' As soon as they have had this thought, they sit upon the fiery lotus flowers. The various iron-beaked insects peck and eat their flesh from their bodily pores, hundreds of thousands of iron wheels enter through the crowns of their heads, and iron pitchforks as numerous as the sands of the Ganges gouge out their eyes. The bronze dogs of the hells transform into tens of billions of iron dogs, vying to tear apart their bodies, seize their hearts, and eat them. In an instant, their bodies are like severed flowers filling the eighteen compartments, each flower leaf numbering eighty-four thousand; at the tip of each leaf are their bodies, hands, and limbs within a single compartment. The hell is not large, nor is this body small; they fill such a great hell completely. When these sinners fall into this hell, they pass through eighty-four thousand great kalpas before this niraya is exhausted.
