The Buddha said: 'An arhat engages in silence. Having attained arhatship, he has three marks: first, he no longer commits offenses of body, speech, or mind; second, the three poisons are extinguished; third, in clothing and food, he has no need to make them fine, but merely puts an end to thoughts of hunger and cold. Having these three causes and conditions, he is able to transform freely without attachment in mind; because of defilements, one does not attain mastery.' The Buddha said: 'The mind should simply distinguish the six defilements and must not cling to them; if one clings, one does not attain the Way.'
