The Buddha said: 'When a monk enters someone's home, he should be like a hand moving through empty space with nothing obstructing it; his mind too should have no attachment. Hearing agreeable sounds with the ear is attachment; hearing disagreeable sounds is attachment.' A monk addressed the Buddha: 'If both the agreeable and the disagreeable are attachments, how is one to attain the Way?' The Buddha said: 'When a monk understands emptiness and is completely free of attachment, this corresponds to the practice of a bodhisattva.' Hearing these words, the monks all leaped with joy and immediately attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas.
