The eight brother heavenly kings—
Four each to the west and east of the gate—
Share the practice of a single mantra (mudrā is obscure).
At the east gate is Deva Indra,
Dwelling on Mount Meru,
Adorned with a jeweled crown and necklaces,
Holding a single-pronged vajra mudrā in hand,
Naturally surrounded by the heavenly host.
To his left is placed the host of Sūryadeva,
In an eight-horse chariot,
With two consorts on his left and right:
Jayā and Vijayā,
Also called 'Victorious' and 'Invincible'.
His retinue deploys the planetary grahas:
Aṅgāraka on the left side,
Śukra in the east,
Budha in the south,
Bṛhaspati
Placed to the north of Sūrya,
Śanaiścara in the southeast,
Rāhu in the southwest,
Ketu [Kembha] in the northwest,
Ketu in the northeast.
To the south of the southern latitude is placed
The Nirghāta heavenly dog.
To the north of the northern latitude is placed
The Ulkāpāta fire.
Marīcī proceeds before them,
Flanked by attendants who guard him.
Brahmā is to the right of Indra.
The characteristics of their mudrās shall now be spoken:
Seated on a seven-swan chariot,
With four faces and a topknot crown,
Four hands: prajñā hand holds a flower,
Next prajñā hand holds a rosary,
Upper samādhi hand holds a kuṇḍikā,
Next lower hand slants the palm,
Bending the wind finger and extending the rest straight:
This is the pure-conduct auspicious mudrā,
Named the syllable Oṃ mudrā.
For Marīcī's treasure vase:
The samādhi hand forms an empty fist,
While the prajñā palm extends downward facing.
The gods of the Four Dhyānas are on the left;
The Anatapta gods of the Five Pure Abodes are on the right.
Indra's mudrā: internally bound fist,
With both wind fingers erect like vajras.
For Sūryadeva, place the merit and wisdom hands
Beside each respective water wheel,
Upturned in the shape of a chariot.
For Jayā and Vijayā:
With the prajñā and samādhi hands,
Wind and earth fingers back-to-back inward-facing,
Water and fire fingers mutually holding,
Tips of the samādhi and prajñā wheels joined,
And ether fingers erected, placed at the heart.
For the nine grahas: join the two hands,
Erecting the ether wheels side by side.
To the right of Indra is Brahmā's mudrā:
The samādhi ether finger holds the water finger,
Just as if holding a flower.
Place the samādhi wind finger atop the fire finger,
And hold the middle joint of the water finger with the ether finger:
This is the secret seal of the consort of Brahmā.
For Gandharva and Asura:
From the previous mudrā, internally bind the fist
And extend the water fingers: this is the Gandharva mudrā.
For Asura, using the wisdom hand,
Twist the wind finger atop the ether wheel.
