If someone hears the names of the Victorious Ones, / Generates a mind of faith, / And bows down for a single moment, / Their merit will surpass that! / As for those who copy them in writing, read and hold them, / And bow down with faith—what need is there to speak of them? / Their merit is immeasurable. / Whoever copies them in writing, / Reads and recites them, / And generates the aspiration to bow down at all times, / Possesses greater merit than that of erecting / Stūpas filling a thousand world-systems! / Then Mahākāśyapa, / Śāriputra, Ānanda, / The mighty protectors of the world, / The Brahmā gods, the lords of gods, / The universal monarchs, and the four great kings / Bowed their heads to the Bhagavān's feet / And spoke these words in unison: / 'After the Bhagavān has entered nirvāṇa, / We shall widely propagate and teach this to sentient beings. / In order to make their bodies and minds always happy, / We shall protect those who bow down. / Those who have broken their vows, / Committed the sins of the five ānantaryas, / And disparaged sameness, / Will, upon hearing the names of those Buddhas, / Dwell happily on the ground of complete purity; / Just like Prince Priyadarśana, / They will see the Buddha nature in the future!' / Then the Bhagavān Śākyamuni addressed the great assembly in these words: 'Listen well, all of you! I shall explain to you the causes and conditions of past actions. In the past, immeasurable aeons ago, I heard the names of the Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times from the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha named Ruciraprabha. Experiencing immense joy, I joined my palms and received them on the crown of my head. Having received them, wherever sentient beings dwelt, I widely propagated and taught them to immeasurable and boundless sentient beings, causing them to hear the names of the Buddhas.
