Among them, there was an evil minister named Rāhula. The minister Rāhula rebelled against the king and arrayed a fourfold army, namely: an elephant corps, a chariot corps, a cavalry corps, and an infantry corps. Having arrayed them, he attacked the king of Vārāṇasī and took the king's life. Having killed the king in this manner, he sent forth the fourfold army and also killed the eldest prince of a border principality. Then, having also deposed the middle prince, he prepared to lead an army against the youngest prince of the border principality. That youngest prince was exceptionally handsome and strikingly beautiful, inherently virtuous, subdued, smiling when speaking, speaking only for the benefit of others without causing harm, and continually governed the country in accordance with righteous Dharma. Because he did not engage in wrongful livelihood, the people of the country were also happy, prosperous, endowed with enjoyments and precious wealth, and the storehouses were full. All praised and lauded the qualities of that king, and both the gods of the sky and all worldly deities rejoiced in and revered him. At that time, that king had an only son named Prince Suśādeva, who was extremely intelligent and bright, endowed with a loving heart, delighting in generosity, golden-complexioned, well-proportioned in the seven parts of the body, fully endowed with the marks of a great man, and seven years of age; the royal father also loved and cherished him deeply. At that time, a deity guarding the palace said this to the king: "Does the king know? The minister Rāhula has rebelled, seized the realm, and assassinated the king, your father. He has also dispatched the fourfold army and deprived the two prince elder brothers of their life faculties. If the hosts of troops arrive here before long, why does the king not save his life and flee to a remote place?"
