replied: “Sons of noble family, listen well and take this thoroughly to heart, and I will explain and expound it to you. Past limitless hundreds of thousands of ten millions of world realms to the west of here, there is a buddhafield named Sahā. There dwells the Buddha named Śākyamuni, a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassable charioteer of persons to be tamed, teacher, victor, the Buddha, the Bhagavān. Surrounded by a vast retinue, he expounds to the entire vast assembly the sūtra called Great Skill in Means: Repaying Kindness. It is for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, to eradicate the thorn of wrong view from its roots for all sentient beings, to ensure that newly resolved bodhisattvas do not turn back from the path of awakening and become firm, to establish all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas upon the ultimate path of the single vehicle, to cause the great bodhisattvas to swiftly attain awakening and repay the kindness of the Buddha, to cause all sentient beings to remember weighty kindness, to deliver all sentient beings across the ocean of suffering, and to inspire all ordinary beings to practice filial piety toward their parents, that this light has shone forth.” At that time, among that retinue, some ten thousand bodhisattvas who were leaders and teachers of the great assembly rose from their seats, arranged their upper robes over one shoulder, placed their right knees on the ground, and said to the Bhagavān: “By the Bhagavān's blessing, grant that we may go to that Sahā world realm, make offerings and pay homage to the Tathāgata Śākyamuni, and hear this sublime Sūtra of Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha Who Has Great Skill in Means!” Then that Buddha spoke to those bodhisattvas: “Sons of noble family, when you reach that Sahā
