knower of the world, unsurpassable charioteer of persons to be tamed, teacher, victor, the Buddha, the Bhagavān, dwelt in the buddhafield called Well Arrayed. That buddhafield was exceedingly level, its ground made of lapis lazuli and marked into squares by lines of refined gold. Trees of the seven kinds of precious substances grew there, and those trees were as high as an arrow-shot, exquisitely adorned with flowers, fruits, branches, and leaves. When stirred by gentle breezes, they emitted melodious sounds, hearing which ordinary beings never grew weary. Here and there were springs, ponds, and bathing pools, completely filled with water possessing the eight qualities, and the bottoms of the pools were spread with golden sand. On the four sides of the pools, the surface of the water was completely covered with delightfully fragrant lotuses, puṇḍarīkas, pāruṣakas, and other blue, yellow, red, and white flowers as large as chariot wheels. Upon those waters, flocks of diverse birds uttered exceedingly pleasing, sweet notes. Within those pools were boats made of the seven precious substances, in which many beings enjoyed themselves and made merry at will. Between those precious trees were arranged lion thrones one yojana in height, adorned with the seven precious substances, over which layers of divine robes were spread, pervaded by the fragrance of divine incense. Upon such a throne strewn with divine flowers, the Tathāgata Joyous King sat cross-legged, before whom countless hundreds of thousands of ten millions of bodhisattvas assembled, bowed with palms joined, and spoke to that Tathāgata with one voice as follows: “Bhagavān, by what cause and by what condition has this excellent light—endowed with blue, yellow, red, and white colors, intensely radiant, beyond compare—shone forth from the western direction upon these multitudes of the retinue, so that whoever is touched by the light becomes happy in body and mind? Out of your compassionate heart, please explain this, O Bhagavān!” To that, the Bhagavān
