On that throne strewn with a carpet of divine flowers, the Tathāgata Nimittāśaya sat cross-legged. Boundless hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattvas lined up in front of him, joined their palms, bowed down, and addressed that Tathāgata in unison: "Bhagavān, by what cause and what condition has this fine-colored ray of light—possessing the colors blue, yellow, red, and white, utterly clear and beyond compare—shone from the direction of the north upon this great retinue, such that everyone touched by this light has become blissful in body and mind? Out of compassion, may the Bhagavān please explain!" Then that Bhagavān replied: "Noble sons, listen well and attentively, retain it in your minds, and I shall explain and reveal it to you. North of here, beyond eighty quintillion world realms, there is a Buddha realm called Sahā. There, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, knower of the world, guide of beings to be tamed, the Buddha, the Bhagavān named Śākyamuni is surrounded by a great retinue, and to all the retinue he is teaching the sūtra called Great Skill in Means of Repaying Kindness. For the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings; to uproot the thorn of wrong view in all sentient beings; so that newly aspiring bodhisattvas will not turn back from the path of awakening and will become steadfast; to place all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas onto the path of the single culminating vehicle; so that the mahāsattvas will swiftly attain awakening and repay the kindness of the Buddha; to make all sentient beings mindful of heavy kindness; for the sake of all sentient
