food, whose flesh is this?' They raised a great cry, wept, and said to the patron: 'It is unbearable to say! Alas, we are wretched! Alas, we are wretched! Woe, woe! We cannot but speak the truth to you: among what we carry on our shoulders, some is our father's flesh, some is our mother's flesh, some is our son's flesh, some is our siblings' flesh, and some is the flesh of our kinsmen!' Thus those starving people individually spoke the truth to the householder: 'Being utterly starved, we have come to eat each other's own flesh!' At that time, with his breath choked, the patron said to the starving people: 'From this day forth, do not eat each other's own flesh! Whatever provisions you need—whether clothing to wear, food to eat, drink, remedies for sickness, or whatever provisions are required—I shall give you everything. Come to my door in seven days, and according to your wishes, I shall satisfy you with clothing, food, remedies for sickness, or whatever you desire!' When he instructed them thus, they were overjoyed and praised him: 'Splendid, splendid! Most wonderful!' Then the patron returned home and assembled his wife, sons, servants, and laborers. Radiating a joyful demeanor, he addressed his wife, children, servants, and laborers with gentle, pleasing, and melodious words: 'You must know this! Listen well to the words I speak! Do you know that due to a great drought, a famine has occurred, all people are starving, and countless numbers have died? In my house, all the granaries are full and overflowing, and there is countless grain; so let us perform merit before the time has passed!' When all his wife and children heard those instructions, they said: 'Splendid, splendid!
