Even if we were to give away our life and body, we would not begrudge it, so what need is there to speak of granaries, wealth, goods, and food!' Then the patron was also overjoyed: 'It is wonderful and splendid that you are truly my companions for attaining unsurpassed awakening! Each of you must also quickly perform whatever tasks are to be done and whatever preparations are to be made, and cooking what is proper to cook; properly accomplish what is to be accomplished quickly, so that seven days from now everything is surely prepared!' At that time, having instructed each of them, the patron went outside the house. Finding a place where the ground was level, vast, and pleasant, he immediately cleaned the ground of rubbish, cleared it of earth and stones, swept it, and arranged thrones and seats. Having thus prepared the ground for giving charity where many would assemble, he loaded five hundred oxen with food and brought them to the site of charity. Food was piled up like a mountain, and buttermilk was pooled like a lake. Butter, sesame oil, cakes, and the like—foods possessing a hundred flavors—were prepared with nine varieties of dishes. In addition, garments, bracelets, garlands, various bodily ornaments, oxen, horses, the seven precious gems, and so forth were all exquisitely prepared. When seven days had passed and dawn broke, on the seventh day they beat the kettle-drum, blew the conch shell, and called out in a loud voice: 'Everyone assemble and come to this place of charity!' At that time, upon hearing the calling voice, as if blessed by the noble ones, a feeling of great joy arose in everyone. All flocked to the site of bestowing charity, and according to their wishes, they were served with garments, bedding, food and drink, various bodily ornaments, numerous medicinal remedies for sickness, oxen, horses, the seven precious gems, and whatever else they desired, taking away all the provisions of charity without leaving anything behind.
