having arrived, he, along with his wife and children, indulged in the five sensual pleasures just as they wished. Then, when about seven days had passed, the people said, “When that patron previously gave gifts of clothing, food, drink, and so forth, poison arose in the food they ate, and they all died!” Because they had died in this manner, everyone exclaimed, “How wondrous! How wondrous! That great patron, out of loving compassion for all, satisfied them with food and so forth according to their desires, keeping their bodies and lives intact, yet before many days had passed, poison arose and all died!” Such rumors spread. Then, when the great patron heard what had happened, he became dejected and sorrowful. He asked his wife, children, and the others, “How did you prepare the food? How could wicked poison have entered the food?” His wife, children, servants, and laborers replied, “Poison is impossible! Investigate carefully where this poison came from!” Then that patron, while inspecting the household and wandering through it step by step, saw a well that was covered and veiled at the top. He asked, “Why is this well covered?” They replied, “As for this well, when you, gṛhapati, were a small child, three venomous snakes were being raised; this well was dug and the three venomous snakes were put inside. This well is a well where venomous snakes dwell. The water is also poisonous, so by drinking this water, one falls ill and dies.” When that patron heard these words, he asked the laborers, “When you prepared the food during that time, did you not draw from this well water and prepare the food with it?” The laborers said, “Because we had to prepare so much food, we were in a hurry, so we also drew this water and cooked the food with it.” The gṛhapati was displeased, saying, “How wondrous! I seem to have been dull-witted and lacking in intelligence: why did I raise venomous snakes and dig a venomous well?”
