I intend to plant a thousand lamps and make an offering to the great teacher brāhmaṇa." The butcher said, "In that case, I am able to cut your body." Hearing these words, the king rejoiced greatly and said to the butcher, "You are truly a friend who will help me attain unsurpassed awakening!" Then the butcher, standing before the king, spoke to the king in a loud, bellowing voice: "Does the king know? In the rule of executing a man, one must first cut off the head, sever the neck, dismember the arms and legs, and also extract the sinews and tendons. Can the great king endure the suffering of such pain?" The king was filled with great joy to hear these words. Then the butcher took a knife shaped like an ox's tongue, and before long he cut fully a thousand wounds into the king's body. The butcher thought that the king's resolve would waver, but since his mind did not waver, he dropped the knife on the ground and fled. Then, into the thousand wounds cut into the great king's body, melted butter was poured, wicks of fine cloth were inserted, and a thousand lamps were lit. At that time, the great teacher brāhmaṇa, seeing what had been done, thought: "If I do not preach the Dharma immediately, it is uncertain whether his body and life will survive. If his life does not hold out, who will listen to the Dharma?" Having thought this, he said to the king: "Having desired to hear the Buddha's Dharma, you have practiced difficult austerities with exceedingly heroic vigor. Listen well and retain it firmly in your mind, and I will now teach you the Buddha's Dharma!" Hearing these words, the king became exceedingly joyful. For instance, just as a filial son whose parents have died is intensely sad and tormented by grief, but rejoices greatly when his parents are revived, so too the king rejoiced greatly. Then the brāhmaṇa said to the king: "'If there is birth, there will be death; / this cessation is bliss.' He taught this half-verse.
