of water, and beside that spring was a fine flat boulder. At one time, the ṛṣi who lived on the southern side of the mountain washed his clothes and feet on that boulder, and then returned to his dwelling. Not long after, a doe came to the spring to drink water. After drinking water at the spring, she drank the wash water on the boulder where the ṛṣi had washed his clothes. After drinking the wash water, she looked back at her hindquarters and licked her female organ. Then a child was conceived in that doe's belly. When the months were completed, according to the nature of wild beasts that when giving birth they give birth in the place where they initially conceived, she came to the edge of the spring, and crying and rolling upon that boulder, a girl was born. At that time, the ṛṣi of the southern side heard the sound of the deer crying, and out of a mind of compassion, he went to see the deer. When he saw that the doe had given birth to a baby girl and the deer was licking her, upon the ṛṣi's arrival the deer abandoned her child and ran away. Then the ṛṣi saw that the girl born to the deer was beautiful, lovely, and possessed marks [of beauty]; and with a mind of compassion, he wrapped her in grass garments, took her in his lap, and returned to his dwelling. He gathered wild fruits and berries and raised her. In time she grew up, reaching fourteen years of age. The ṛṣi loved the girl exceedingly and had her continually tend the fire. One day she was negligent and the fire went out. The ṛṣi scolded her with words: 'From the time you were raised until now the fire has never gone out; why did you let the fire die?' and rebuking her, he sent her to fetch fire from the ṛṣi residing on the northern side of the mountain. Then, just as her father had instructed, the girl went toward the northern side of the mountain; and with each step, a lotus flower sprang up from beneath her foot. In this way, with lotuses blooming in an even row following her tracks, she went to the northern side of the mountain to fetch fire. At that time, that ṛṣi saw that the girl was exceedingly meritorious
