The Bodhisattva understood the virtues of his parents, and through his prior aspiration, he knew that the Tathāgata's body had taken birth. In that way, in order to fulfill the aspiration of the Tathāgata, his mother passed away because she did not want to be bowed down to [by the Buddha]. At that time, the entire great retinue spoke in unison to Queen Māyā: 'Sadhu! Queen Māyā, it is exceedingly wonderful that you have given birth to the Tathāgata, the teacher of gods and humans, matchless in the world!' Then the son of a gandharva, Dharmamālā, rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, and bowing with palms joined toward where the Buddha was, addressed the Bhagavān: 'What merit did this Mother Māyā perform? Due to what cause and condition was the Tathāgata born [from her]?' The Bhagavān replied: 'Listen well and hold this firmly in mind; I shall explain it to you. Innumerable and inconceivable eons ago in the past, there appeared in the world a Buddha named Vipaśyin, a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide of people to be tamed, teacher, victor. When that Buddha's holy Dharma set, down to the practice of the Dharma of the mere image setting, at that time in the realm of Vārāṇasī there was a mountain called Ṛṣipatana. On that mountain dwelt hundreds of thousands of so-called pratyekabuddhas. On that mountain also dwelt innumerable ṛṣis possessing the five superknowledges. Because so many noble ones and ṛṣis dwelt there, that mountain was named Ṛṣipatana. On that mountain, one ṛṣi dwelt on the southern side of the mountain. Another ṛṣi dwelt on the northern side of the mountain. Between where those two ṛṣis dwelt, there was a spring
