"Because she was born from an animal, she did not even look back at me. Having raised her from childhood, now that she has become human, the king has abducted her, leaving me empty-handed!" So saying, he entered his hut and cast a spell: "If the king casts her out, let that be the end of it. But if he cherishes her and does not discard her, let her wishes not be fulfilled!" / At that time, the great king of Vārāṇasī returned to his palace and cherished her, giving her the name Queen Mṛgī. The vassal kings of the borderlands and the ministers gathered together to praise the king with sweet words, and the king was exceedingly joyful and pleased. / Then, not long thereafter, she conceived a child in her womb. The king himself attended to the queen, providing fine and gentle bedding, food, drink, and the like. Then, after ten months had passed, expecting that she would bear a son to succeed the royal lineage, when the months were complete she gave birth to a lotus. Through the power of the ṛṣi's spell, the king grew angry and declared, "It is true that she was born of an animal!" He banished the queen and had the lotus cast away. / Then, some time later, the ministers of Vārāṇasī went out to the pleasure grove to sightsee and play. Playing and making music, they staged fights between horses and elephants. They also pitted wrestlers against one another in trials of strength. Among the wrestlers, there was one wrestler of supreme and paramount strength who stamped his foot upon the ground, causing the earth to shake. A nearby lotus pond also shook. Beside that lotus pond was a boulder, beneath which lay a lotus that fell into the pond. / Seeing the lotus that had fallen into the pond—its color exquisite, of deep saffron hue, radiant with light—the king was overjoyed. He said to the ministers, "I have never seen such a lotus before!" Then he commanded, "Fetch that lotus out of the water!" and dispatched someone to retrieve the lotus.
