having not seen the Tathāgata, felt an unhappy mind arise, and to remember the Tathāgata he had an image of the Tathāgata carved out of ox-head sandalwood. He bowed in homage and made offerings, visualizing that the Tathāgata was residing there directly in person, and made offerings [to it]. At that time, the great king summoned the six tīrthika teachers and asked, "Where is the Tathāgata residing at present?" The six teachers said to the king: "Great King, do you not know? The ascetic Gautama is an illusionist, and that is how he is. The illusions of an illusionist lack true reality. Thus our scriptures say that after one or two thousand years an illusionist who makes illusions will appear, so the ascetic Gautama is precisely that illusion." At that time, the noble Upapāla went to where the great king was and said to the king: "Great King, do you know? Seven days from now, the Tathāgata will descend from the heaven of the Thirty-Three to Jambudvīpa." Hearing him speak thus, the king's mind became filled with great joy. He gathered the local people, sprinkled water, and swept the ground. They arranged incense and flowers, hung silk valances, banners, and parasols, and prepared and set out an array of various offering requisites, such as abundant fine food and music. Then the six tīrthika teachers came there and said, "You are preparing and setting out an array of various offering requisites in this way; are you inviting the king, or are you inviting the prince?" They replied, "It is neither of those." "Then are you calling a great minister, or are you calling a brāhmaṇa or a gṛhapati? If not that, are you holding a festival for relatives and friends?" They replied: "It is none of those; we are requesting the Buddha, the Bhagavān, to come." The six teachers asked, "Who is this one called 'Buddha'?" They answered, "He is the All-Knowing One."
