"Before long, moreover, we will become old and decline. If we do not know moderation in food, we will become sick. Even if we can live for a hundred years, in the end we must die." Thus the princes were overcome with sorrow and unhappiness. Disliking even food and drink, they went back to the palace and said to their father, the king: "The realms of the world are suffering and devoid of happiness; father king, we beg to go forth [into homelessness]!" The king said to the princes, "Birth, old age, sickness, and death are identical for everyone, so why should you alone grieve?" The princes replied, "We cannot endure the affliction of repeatedly taking birth after death and constantly going among the five types of destinies." Then the king did not oppose the princes' resolve and granted permission for them to go forth. The queen said to the princes: "When you have gone forth, do not abandon me and travel a long distance. There is a very solitary pleasure park behind the palace, with secluded trees and woods; stay there, and I will serve and provide you so that you lack none of the four requisites." After the princes had gone forth, they stayed in the pleasure park behind [the palace] as the queen had requested, and all those princes gradually attained pratyekabuddha awakening one by one. In that way, four hundred and ninety-nine princes gradually went forth. Having attained the fruit of their own awakening, they came to the royal palace and said to their father the king and mother, "We have achieved that purpose for which we went forth." Then those monks leaped up into the sky above: disappearing from the eastern direction, they emerged in the western direction; disappearing from the western direction, they emerged in the eastern direction; disappearing from the southern direction, they emerged in the northern direction; disappearing from the northern direction, they emerged in the southern direction. Sometimes they filled the sphere of space with a huge body; sometimes from a single body
