they emanated countless bodies; sometimes water flowed from the upper half of their bodies while fire blazed from the lower half of their bodies, and so on. After displaying various kinds of miracles, they set fire to their bodies and passed into nirvāṇa. Then Queen Mṛgī gathered their relics, erected four hundred and ninety-nine stūpas in the pleasure park behind [the palace], and made offerings. Even the youngest of the princes attained pratyekabuddha awakening after ninety days had passed, and he too displayed great miracles to his father and mother. Having displayed great miracles, he passed into nirvāṇa. Then Queen Mṛgī gathered his relics, erected a stūpa, and made offerings. At that time, every day Queen Mṛgī made offerings to the stūpas of the five hundred pratyekabuddhas with sublime incense, sublime flowers, and various kinds of music; and grieving in sorrow beside those stūpas, she spoke as follows: "Although I gave birth to five hundred sons and they went forth, not even one of them generated the mind directed toward unsurpassed awakening!" Therefore, she made this aspiration: "Whatever merit comes from my having made offerings to the five hundred pratyekabuddhas, having built five hundred stūpas, and having worshiped their relics, I dedicate it to all sentient beings. In the future, may I not desire to give birth to many sons who do not generate the mind directed toward unsurpassed awakening, but having given birth to only a single son, may he arouse the mind directed toward unsurpassed awakening, go forth in that very life, and be endowed with omniscient gnosis!" The Bhagavān said to Ānanda: "If you think that Queen Mṛgī of that time and occasion was someone else, do not view it so. Queen Mṛgī of that time and occasion was none other than Queen Māyāvatī at present. Because Queen Māyāvatī thus made offerings to the five hundred pratyekabuddhas and produced immeasurable roots of virtue, by that cause the body of the Tathāgata was born [to her] now.
