When this Dharma of the Buddha was taught, countless gods and humans attained [states ranging] from the first fruit up to the fourth fruit. Inestimable sentient beings aroused the mind directed toward unsurpassed, perfect awakening. Then Ānanda said to the Bhagavān: "What past action did Queen Māyāvatī perform so that she was born among animals, born to an animal, and became a deer's daughter?" The Bhagavān said to Ānanda: "Listen well! I will explain and elucidate to you the cause and conditions of the action Queen Māyāvatī performed in the past. In the past, beyond countless and immeasurable eons ago, at that time and occasion, the Buddha, the Bhagavān named Vipaśyin—the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide of people to be tamed, the Teacher, the Victor—appeared in the world. After he had benefited sentient beings and passed into nirvāṇa, while the true Dharma was practiced through images, at that time and occasion in a country called Vārāṇasī, a certain brāhmaṇa had an only daughter, and then that brāhmaṇa died. That brāhmaṇa's wife raised that daughter. That daughter also gradually grew up. The mother and daughter had an orchard of fruit trees, and the mother had the daughter guard the orchard: "Daughter, I will search for food, and whatever I find I will bring back and eat together with you, my daughter." Daily she searched for food in that way, but one day she was delayed and the hour had passed. The daughter, distressed by hunger and thirst, gave rise to anger and said: 'What happened to that mother of mine that she has not given me food until now, leaving me so hungry and thirsty?' Becoming enraged, she said: 'My mother cannot even match an animal! Even beasts of prey, wild animals, and birds remember their young ones' hunger and thirst
