the saṅgha are worthy of praise and veneration, so speak gentle words and continually remember their kindness. The saṅgha is the field of merit for transcending the three realms. Parents are the supreme and sacred field of merit of the three realms. Why is that? Within the saṅgha there are the four pairs of eight persons and the twelve noble ones; if one attends upon them, one obtains merit, and if one accomplishes it, awakening is attained.
