would quickly show and explain it to the great assembly!' Thus they thought. Then the Bhagavān arose from that samādhi, and Śakra, the lord of the devas, together with the devas of the heaven of the Thirty-Three, set up a lion throne and spread heavenly cloths upon it. Then the Tathāgata sat cross-legged upon the lion throne, just like Mount Meru situated in the ocean. At that time, the bodhisattva Maitreya knew with his mind that the great assembly was puzzled, and being puzzled himself, as he did not comprehend, he arose from his seat, approached where the Buddha was, bowed with his head at [the Buddha's] feet, placed his palms together, bowed, and asked: 'Bhagavān, by what cause and by what condition did such a precious stūpa emerge?' And the Bhagavān spoke thus to the bodhisattva Maitreya: 'Long ago in the past, beyond immeasurable and inconceivable eons, a Tathāgata, Arhat, completely and perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, knower of the world, unexcelled guide of people to be tamed, the teacher named King Vipaśyin appeared in the world and established countless hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of ordinary beings in unsurpassed and perfectly complete awakening. After that Buddha passed into nirvāṇa, during the time of the counterfeit Dharma, there was a land called Vārāṇasī. The great king of Vārāṇasī was endowed with an intelligent mind and constantly ruled the state of the land with righteous governance, so that the people were peaceful and happy.
