my younger brother will suffer great torment." Thinking thus, he said, "I am a blind beggar." Then the cowherd observed him, and inferring from his other bodily marks that he was no ordinary person, said: "My house is not far from here. I will provide for your livelihood, so let us go to my house," and led Prince Kalyāṇakārin home. Having led him home, the cowherd provided him with food, drink, and all necessities, and instructed his sons, daughters, and everyone in the household: "All of you must show respect to this blind man just as you would to me." Then, after looking after him in the house for over a month in that manner, [the family] grew weary and said, "Now our livelihood has declined as well; who can continuously support this blind man?" Kalyāṇakārin heard those words spoken and felt distress in his heart. After that night had passed, the following day he said to the householder, "Now I shall depart." The householder asked, "What has gone wrong that you intend to leave us and go?" Kalyāṇakārin replied, "By nature, hosts and guests do not remain together for long." Kalyāṇakārin further said, "If you have such affection for me, make me a pleasant zheng and escort me to a gathering place of many people or to a great city." Then the householder also provided what was needed according to his wish, escorted him into the midst of many people in the city of King Ṛṣivadana, and safely returned. Prince Kalyāṇakārin was exceedingly skilled on the zheng, and because the sound of the zheng was pleasant and melodious, everyone gave him the necessities of life. They ensured that he was not lacking in food and drink. At that time, there were also five hundred beggars in the land of Ṛṣivadana, and he made sure that all of them had plenty of food and drink. At that time, that king had an orchard of edible fruits, but because the fruit was so abundant, it could never be protected from birds. So the keeper who guarded the orchard said to Prince Kalyāṇakārin
