arrived in the land of King Ṛṣivadana, and from afar he saw Prince Kalyāṇakārin sitting in the royal palace. Then the goose landed right there, came before the prince, and making a pathetic sound, gazed joyfully upon the prince. Then the prince took the letter from the goose's neck and bowed respectfully with his head. He then opened the letter and read it. Having read it, he realized that because his royal parents thought of the prince day and night and wept constantly, both their eyes had become blind. Then Prince Kalyāṇakārin wrote in detail of what had occurred, tied it once again around the goose's neck, and sent it back. Then the goose rejoiced and returned to the land of Vārāṇasī, to the royal father and the queen mother. When the king saw that the letter had arrived, he was completely overjoyed, delighted, and felt boundless enthusiasm. He realized that Prince Kalyāṇakārin had also been robbed by Kalyāṇakārin's brother [Pāpakārin], who stole the jewel, causing him to suffer much agony. Then the royal father immediately seized Pāpakārin, fettered his hands and feet, bound his neck in iron chains, and cast him into prison. Then he dispatched a messenger to King Ṛṣivadana, saying: "Why have you detained the prince and caused us to be tormented with grief?" Then King Ṛṣivadana was terrified, adorned Prince Kalyāṇakārin with garments and ornaments, placed him at the border, and acted according to the message, staging it as though Prince Kalyāṇakārin had returned from the ocean and had only just arrived there now. At that time, King Ṛṣivadana swept and sprinkled water over all the ground where he was coming, raised victory banners, streamers, and parasols, rang bells, beat drums, played diverse instruments, and from afar the king himself, together with his retinue, welcomed the prince inside the palace, gave him his daughter as a wife, and sent him off to the land of Vārāṇasī. When the king and queen of Vārāṇasī heard that the prince had arrived, they were completely overjoyed
