In that time, in that period, beyond incalculable aeons, there appeared in the world the Buddha Bhagavān named Master of Reason, Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Charioteer of Persons to be Tamed, Teacher, the Conqueror. After that Buddha passed into parinirvāṇa, at the time of practicing the Dharma before an image, a bhikṣu who practiced dhyāna was staying in a forest wilderness, and at that time many lice were biting that bhikṣu. Then that bhikṣu made a pact with the lice, saying, 'While I am practicing dhyāna, remain hiding without moving.' Having made this pact, the lice also acted accordingly. Then at another time, a flea came there and said to the lice, 'How is it that you are so fat and healthy?' When it asked this, the lice said, 'Our master always practices dhyāna, and without passing the time, we eat our food and drink at the proper time; therefore, we are healthy.' The flea said, 'I too will stay with you,' and so it stayed there together with them. At that time, while that bhikṣu was practicing dhyāna, the flea caught the scent of flesh and blood and bit that bhikṣu. Then that bhikṣu's mind was disturbed, so he took off his robes, threw them into a fire, and burned them. At that time, in that period, the bhikṣu practicing dhyāna was Buddha Kāśyapa. At that time, in that period, that flea was Devadatta himself. At that time, in that period, the one who became the louse was myself at present. Although that Devadatta harmed me for the sake of profit and honor, now even after becoming fully awakened as a buddha, because he caused blood to flow from the Buddha's body for the sake of profit and reputation, he fell into the great hell of beings. That Devadatta constantly harmed the Tathāgata with an evil mind could not be exhausted even if told for an aeon, yet the Tathāgata constantly protected him with great compassion and a mind of loving-kindness and affection.
