He therefore worshipped and prayed to the spirits of the sacred mountains, the spirits of the trees, and the like, and after ninety days had passed, his wife conceived a son. When the months were completed, she gave birth to a male child whose features were handsome, lovely to behold, endowed with the marks of man, dear to the hearts of his parents, and delightful to many. The child was raised, and when he reached twenty years of age, he wandered outside with his friends to sightsee. On the road, he encountered an enraged ox that trampled him to death. Hearing that their son was dead, his parents began to wail, lament, and roll on the ground. Coating their bodies with dust and tearing their hair, they cried out into the interior [of the house], “Our jewel is gone!” Lamenting, they went to where the son’s corpse lay, took the corpse into their laps, fainted, and upon reviving, wept so much that they went mad. Casting off their garments, they wandered naked until they encountered the Tathāgata. Then, through the force of the Tathāgata’s great compassion, he emanated as their son and met them. The son’s parents felt great joy; they took the son into their laps, recovered from their madness, and regained their senses. The Tathāgata then taught them the Dharma. Hearing the Dharma, they immediately aroused the mind toward unsurpassed, completely perfect awakening. Furthermore, the Tathāgata’s great compassion and the power of his roots of virtue are inconceivable. At that time, King Virūḍhaka assembled a fourfold army, defeated the people of Kapilavastu, captured the sons of the Śākya clan, dug pits into the ground up to their armpits, and buried them so that they could not move or stir. After they had been buried in the ground for seven days, the Tathāgata, by the power of his great compassion, transformed the earth pits into a bathing pool. The water of the pool possessed the eight qualities and was covered with lotus blossoms. Indeed, it was covered with blue, red, yellow, and white padma and puṇḍarīka lotuses the size of chariot wheels, and he emanated various kinds of birds uttering melodious calls.
