“We arouse the mind of awakening; / we shall extensively benefit sentient beings! / We shall train in the Buddha's teaching / and constantly offer honor and service! / Rescued by the power of the Buddha’s compassion, / freed from suffering, our minds and bodies are at ease. / We remember the kindness of the buddhas, bodhisattvas, / and spiritual friends! / Toward masters, teachers, parents, / and other sentient beings as well, / we view all alike, whether fond or hostile; / the merit of repayment is non-dual.” / At that moment, up in the sky, Indra, lord of the gods, along with other deities of the desire realm, showered a rain of divine flowers, made offerings to the Tathāgata with divine music, and spoke together in verse: / “Through our past merit, / the display of light rays is supremely beautiful. / With supreme offerings / we shall accomplish what benefits all! / It is extremely difficult to encounter a buddha; / it is exceedingly rare to hear the true Dharma. / Because of having planted roots of virtue in past lives, / we have encountered the god of the Śākyas! / To remember the kindness of the Buddha, / we arouse the mind of awakening; / our seeing the Buddha / and the virtues of the three vehicles / we dedicate toward unsurpassed awakening / for the benefit of all living beings without exception!” / Having spoken those verses, the gods circumambulated him hundreds of thousands of times, bowed their heads to the Buddha, and returned to the sky above. Furthermore, the power of the Tathāgata’s skill in means and the roots of virtue of his great compassion are inconceivable. At that time, in the city of Vaiśālī, there was a brāhmaṇa clinging to wrong views and overcome by pride. Although Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana befriended this brāhmaṇa and went constantly to his house to teach him the Dharma, he did not develop faith and remained attached to his evil views. That brāhmaṇa was extremely wealthy and possessed abundant precious jewels, yet he had no son. He thought, “If I should die, all my wealth and cattle will be confiscated.”
