At that time, when things had turned out thus for the Śākya youths, they generated a mind of great joy, and immediately aroused the mind oriented toward unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. Having aroused the mind oriented toward awakening, King Vaiḍūrya intoxicated five hundred fierce, wild, black elephants with liquor, fitted iron hoof-caps on their feet, attached sharp swords to their trunks, and with terrible shouts set them to trample the Śākya youths. When the elephant hooves had trampled the Śākya youths, their joints, flesh, skin, and bones were all crushed and flattened into the dirt. Yet through the power of the Tathāgata’s great compassion, their minds and bodies experienced no discomfort. Because their bodies and minds were at ease, they aroused the mind oriented toward awakening. Because they aroused the mind oriented toward awakening, they developed equanimity toward all sentient beings. Because their minds were in equanimity, they were free of hatred. Free of hatred, they passed away and were reborn as gods in the higher realms. Having been reborn as gods in the higher realms, they examined with divine sight what had been the primary cause, and said to one another, 'It is through the kindness of the Buddha's great compassion that we have been reborn as gods! We possess palaces made of the seven precious substances and excellent divine garments; our bodies are luminous, and we enjoy music and every kind of pleasurable delight!' Then they thought, 'Since it is through the miraculous power of the Tathāgata that this has come to pass, we too must arouse a mind of great compassion for the benefit and well-being of all sentient beings. Wherever the Dharma of the Buddha exists—in a village, town, mountain, grove, at the root of a tree, in a palace compound, or a home—wherever this sūtra is written, read, recited, or explained, in that place we will provide and offer whatever Dharma necessities are needed without deprivation. We will protect and safeguard that place day and night so that harm from weapons, infectious diseases, and famine do not occur.' Having made this aspiration, the lifespans, strength, physical complexions, and radiance of those gods
