made King Vaiḍūrya humiliated and ashamed. He then summoned base-caste executioners and ordered them to hack off the hands and feet of the Śākya maidens, cut off their noses and ears, load them onto carts, and cast them into the charnel ground. At that time, their hands and feet severed, the Śākya maidens rolled on the ground, suffering excruciating agony as their lives hung in the balance. Afflicted by suffering, some cried out the names of their parents, brothers, and sisters; some cried out to the heavens; some cried out to the earth; and some wept in utter distress. Among them, one foremost Śākya maiden said to the other maidens: "Sisters, understand this! In the past, I heard the Buddha teach: 'When one is destitute and suffering, if one single-mindedly brings the Buddha to mind, recites his name, and takes refuge in him, one's wishes will be fulfilled and one will attain happiness.'" He is the eye that illuminates the world! He is the deliverer from the suffering of the three realms! He is the bestower of absolute bliss! Why is this so? Because when we suffered
