Because we have been freed from the torment of [suffering], in order to be mindful of the Buddha’s kindness, if we are to repay the Buddha’s kindness now, by what means should we repay it? The Tathāgata’s body is a vajra body, an ever-abiding body, a body free from hunger and thirst, a body of supreme form, and endowed with the inconceivable perfection of dhyāna, samādhi, faculties, powers, and the limbs of awakening. It is fully adorned with the thirty-two marks and the eighty minor marks. Abiding in great parinirvāṇa, he regards all sentient beings like Rāhula. He regards enemies and friends equally and expects nothing in return. Therefore, if we are now to repay the Buddha’s kindness, let us go forth, keep the moral discipline, and uphold the true Dharma!’ Thinking thus, they sought dharma robes and alms bowls, went to the bhikṣuṇī monastery, and requested to go forth. Having reached the dwelling of the bhikṣuṇīs, they first met with the group of six bhikṣuṇīs. The group of six bhikṣuṇīs told us: ‘Young women, you are youthful, in the prime of life, beautiful and attractive. Why do you think of renouncing that which is so hard to renounce and think of going forth? Therefore, would it not be pleasant to enjoy the five worldly sensual pleasures? After experiencing pleasure, when you have grown older, will it not be time enough to go forth?’ Thus they instructed them. The six nuns thought: ‘If these women do not go forth, they will certainly offer us their robes, bowls, and all desired things!’ Thinking thus, they created obstacles to the Śākya girls going forth. Having heard those words, the girls became exceptionally unhappy and overcome with sorrow, thinking: ‘Why should we still encounter such great dread? Just as within delicious food there may be deadly poison, so it is with those bhikṣuṇīs! Even we know that the five worldly sensual pleasures abound in dreadful faults, so why do they regard them as virtues?’ Having thought this, they raised their voices and wept.
