Then, having left and walked on and on, they met the bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā. She asked us, ‘Why are you weeping?’ We said to the bhikṣuṇī, ‘We are weeping because what we intended did not come to pass.’ Utpalavarṇā asked, ‘What did you intend that was not fulfilled?’ ‘We requested ordination, but were not permitted to go forth.’ Utpalavarṇā said, ‘If you are pleased to go forth, I shall ordain you!’ The Śākya girls were overjoyed and went forth as pupils of Utpalavarṇā. Having thus gone forth, they all gathered together and spoke these words: ‘Before we went forth, we did not merely experience minor suffering: our parents, relatives, and friends were slain by enemies, and our own noses, ears, hands, and feet were cut and chopped off, so that we experienced inexhaustible, unthinkable suffering!’ Utpalavarṇā said: ‘What is there even to say about your having experienced that much suffering? When I had not yet gone forth, the tale of the suffering I experienced was beyond reckoning!’ The Śākya girls joined their palms and said to their preceptor: ‘Please explain to us what kind of suffering you experienced before going forth!’ Then the bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā entered samādhi, and through the power of higher knowledge she emitted a great ray of light that illuminated Jambudvīpa. Having gathered together devas, nāgas, yakṣas, humans, non-humans, and others according to the concordance of their karma and causes, she spoke to the vast assembly as follows: ‘When I had not yet gone forth, while dwelling in the land of Śrāvastī, my parents gave me as a bride to a man living in the northern region. According to the regional custom of those northern people, when a woman was about to give birth, she was sent back to her parents’ homeland to give birth. In this way, over many years, I gave birth there repeatedly, earlier and later.
