he displayed. Rising into the sky above by the power of miraculous display, he emanated a great jeweled elephant with a thousand heads. He showed the woolly elephants intertwined with one another, their thousand heads looking backwards. Each of those woolly elephants had seven tusks, and on each tusk there was a bathing pool. In each pool were seven lotus flowers. Upon each lotus sat an emanated Buddha. Each emanated Buddha was attended by a Śāriputra, and each Śāriputra emitted a great beam of light that illuminated world systems of the ten directions as numerous as the sands of the River Gaṅgā, gathering all those with corresponding causes. When all those endowed with the causes had assembled, Śāriputra then displayed a great body filling the entire sky. He also displayed changing from that great body into a small body; entering into the ground as if diving into water, emerging and entering without being seen; blazing fire from the lower part of his body; and pouring forth streams of water from the upper part of his body. Having displayed hundreds to thousands of various, measureless miracles without impediment in the sky above, he descended from the sky and taught the Dharma extensively to the great assembly. Having gladdened, inspired, and delighted them, he caused hundreds of thousands of measureless sentient beings to arouse the mind directed toward unsurpassed, complete awakening. He caused hundreds of thousands of measureless sentient beings to attain [the fruits] from stream-enterer up to arhat, and he further caused hundreds of thousands of measureless sentient beings to arouse the mind toward the [paths of] śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. Because Śāriputra had thus accomplished measureless benefit and happiness, he addressed the great assembly: "How could I possibly bear to see the Tathāgata pass into nirvāṇa before me?" So saying, he rose into the sky above, brought forth fire from his own body,
