and, consuming his body in flames, passed into nirvāṇa. At that time, the multitude of the assembly, grieved at heart, gazed at Śāriputra with unblinking eyes, wailed aloud with laments, and their bodies were covered in dust. The sun lost its brilliance, and heaven and earth trembled violently. Then the great assembly gathered Śāriputra's bones, erected a stūpa, and made offerings. At that time, hundreds of thousands of the multitude, longing for Śāriputra and tormented by sorrow, became dazed, bewildered, and lost consciousness. Then the Tathāgata, through the force of his compassion, emanated himself as Śāriputra and sat among the retinue. When the great assembly saw that Śāriputra, their suffering of unhappiness was pacified, and they rejoiced once more. Having attained such joyful minds, they all aroused the mind toward unsurpassed, complete awakening. Then Ānanda, knowing through the Tathāgata's blessing the doubts arising in the mind of the great assembly, rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, bowed with palms joined, and said to the Buddha: "Bhagavān, what was the cause and what was the condition that Śāriputra passed into nirvāṇa before the Tathāgata, causing the great assembly to be unhappy and mourn?" The Bhagavān addressed Ānanda and the great assembly: "Not only has Śāriputra passed into nirvāṇa before the Tathāgata in the present time; in past times as well, unable to bear seeing me pass away before him, he passed away before me." Then Ānanda asked the Buddha: "Bhagavān, in past times, how did it happen that Śāriputra passed away first?" The Bhagavān said: "Listen well! In the past, beyond incalculable eons, at that time and in that age, there was a land named Vārāṇasī.
