verses:
'Listening to the nectar of the Buddha's teaching,
One is never tired or weary;
One never falls under the power of laziness,
Nor is there anything that is not beneficial.
In the ocean of saṃsāra of the five destinies,
Like sinking into turbid mud,
Because of being bound by craving and desire,
Due to lack of knowledge, the world wanders in cyclic existence.
In past times, practicing straight and true,
Because you gave gifts equanimously,
You possess the mark between the eyebrows,
Whose radiance of light is immeasurable.
Your eyes are like the crescent moon,
Viewing without remainder the regions of the ten directions;
They are the eye of the mind for all wandering beings,
Seeing them brings great joy.'
At that time, Śāriputra praised the Tathāgata with hundreds of thousands of verses, bowed his head to his feet, circumambulated him up to hundreds of thousands of times, and said to the gods, nāgas, humans, and non-humans: 'Sons of good family, alas, alas! The world is emptied! Ah, alas! The world is emptied! How pitiful, how pitiful! The world is emptied! The boat and bridge of the precious sublime Dharma are destroyed! The tree of unsurpassed awakening is broken! The sublime precious banner has fallen! The sun of the unsurpassed Buddha has set behind the mountain of the great parinirvāṇa!' When he spoke thus, the entire great assembly was terrified, becoming frightened to the point of their body hairs standing on end. Even the sun lost its clear radiance, mountains collapsed, and the great earth shook violently. Then Śāriputra spoke these verses to the great assembly:
'I behold the body of the Buddha,
Like a mountain of refined gold;
All marks and qualities will cease,
And only a mere name will remain.
In order to emerge from the three worlds,
One should strive to master diligence;
If one chooses virtuous deeds,
Passing into nirvāṇa is supreme bliss.'
Then Śāriputra, having inspired the great assembly, manifested the power of miracles
