The king of that land of Vārāṇasī was named Mahāraśmi (Great Light). King Mahāraśmi ruled over sixty border kingdoms and eight hundred cities. That king, constantly endowed with a compassionate heart, gave gifts to all without refusal. At that time, one border king was displeased with that king and constantly harbored evil thoughts. King Mahāraśmi, each month according to the sun of the six times, loaded five hundred woolly elephants with jewels, wealth, clothing, food, and drink, heaped them at markets and the four city gates, and gave them away to everyone. At that time, when that hostile border king heard that King Mahāraśmi gave whatever was desired—clothing, food, gold, silver, and even precious jewels—to all without refusal, that border king became jealous of King Mahāraśmi's merit of generosity. He assembled his ministers and ordered: 'Who among you can go to beg for the head of King Mahāraśmi of Vārāṇasī?' The ministers said: 'None of us is capable.' Then an order was issued to all: 'Whoever goes to beg for the head of King Mahāraśmi of Vārāṇasī and returns with it will be given a thousand measures of gold.' One brāhmaṇa said: 'I am capable of going to beg for it, so provide me with equipment and provisions.' Since that country was six thousand krośas away from Vārāṇasī, provisions and equipment were prepared accordingly, and the brāhmaṇa departed for Vārāṇasī. At that time, when that brāhmaṇa arrived in the region of Vārāṇasī, the great earth shook in six ways. Wild beasts and deer were terrified and fled in all four directions. The sun and moon also became dim and obscured as if veiled. The five planets and the stars did not move according to their seasons. Rainbow-like
