and in nirvāṇa is called 'taking refuge in the Dharma.'" The [venerable one] asked, "Does one take refuge in the culmination of one's own body, or does one take refuge in the culmination of another's body?" The Bhagavān replied, "Taking refuge in the culmination of one's own body and the culmination of another's body is called 'taking refuge in the Dharma.'" The [venerable one] asked, "How is one taking refuge in the Saṅgha?" The Bhagavān replied, "Taking refuge is a verbal action; taking refuge in the field of merit, the qualities of the śrāvakas of learning and no-more-learning, is called 'taking refuge in the Saṅgha.'" The [venerable one] asked, "Does one take refuge in the conventional truth of the Saṅgha, or does one take refuge in the ultimate truth of the Saṅgha? If one takes refuge in the ultimate truth of the Saṅgha, then formerly, when the Buddha conferred the threefold refuge upon Trapuṣa and Bhallika, it would have been inappropriate for him to state, 'In the future there will be what is called the Saṅgha, so take refuge in it,' because the ultimate truth of the Saṅgha is ever-present in the world." The Bhagavān replied, "Because the conventional truth of the Saṅgha is the support for the ultimate Saṅgha, he said, 'In the future there will be the Saṅgha, so take refuge in it.' When there is the retinue of the Saṅgha, among them are the four practitioners of the path and the four attainers of the fruit, an unsurpassed field of merit. Therefore, among the ninety-six kinds of retinues, the Saṅgha is exquisite, supreme, and peerless. Thus, when he said, 'In the future there will be the Saṅgha, so take
