The Dharma Jewel is the fruit of brahmacarya. Distinguishing by way of cause and effect: the Buddha is the cause. The Dharma is the effect. The Saṅgha is the cause. The Dharma Jewel is the effect. Distinguishing by way of path and result: the Buddha is the path. The Dharma is the result. The Saṅgha is the path. The Dharma Jewel is the result. The teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma. Because the Buddha is born from the Dharma, the Dharma is the mother of the Buddha, and the Buddha abides in the Dharma." The [venerable one] asked, "If the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, why is the Dharma not mentioned first among the Three Jewels?" The Bhagavān replied, "Although the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, the Dharma is not taught by anyone other than the Buddha. Because the path must also be accomplished by a person, the Buddha was mentioned first." Then Aniruddha said this to the Bhagavān: "Bhagavān, when undertaking the refuge in the Three Jewels, if one mentions the Dharma Jewel first and the Buddha Jewel later, is it valid as taking refuge in the three?" The Bhagavān replied, "If one lacks comprehension and knowledge, even if the order is mistaken, there is no fault, and it counts as taking refuge. If one knowingly and deliberately utters it in a mistaken way, it entails a fault and does not count as taking refuge in the three." The [venerable one] asked, "If one mentions the Buddha and the Dharma, but does not mention the Saṅgha, is it valid as the threefold refuge? If one mentions the Dharma and the Saṅgha, but does not mention the Buddha, is it valid as taking refuge? If one mentions the Buddha and the Saṅgha, but does not mention the Dharma, does it count as taking refuge in the three?" The Bhagavān replied, "None of those is valid; it does not count." The [venerable one] asked, "Can one obtain the five precepts without taking refuge in the three? Can one obtain the eight-branch precepts without taking refuge in the three? Can one obtain the ten precepts without taking refuge in the three?
