is it suitable to attain [them]? Is it suitable to receive full ordination without performing the motion and the fourfold proclamation?" The Bhagavān replied, "Neither of those is suitable. If one receives the five precepts, one must first take the three refuges. Having gone for refuge to the three, the five precepts will subsequently be attained. Thereupon, the five precepts are spoken, and the other person should know the names of the five precepts. Likewise, having performed the motion and the fourfold proclamation, ordination becomes complete. Afterward, to ensure understanding and comprehension, the four reliances, the four root offenses, and the thirteen saṅghāvaśeṣas should be spoken and taught. Alternatively, having taken refuge, if the precept of not taking life is taught, one attains the precepts; therefore, by explaining one precept, the five precepts are said to be attained. If one is able [to keep] one precept, one is able [to keep] all five precepts. Furthermore, the five precepts are interconnected with one another, and from the beginning one has pledged to undertake the five precepts. In yet another sense, after taking the five precepts, one attains the precepts. What some teachers say—that having taken the three refuges, one attains the five precepts—is true in its meaning, just as the rites of motion and proclamation are performed, and just as is explained regarding taking the eight-limbed precepts, taking the ten precepts, and taking the five precepts." He asked, "If one had previously taken refuge in the three and become an upāsaka, and later, whether one takes the five precepts or the ten precepts, is it necessary to take refuge anew?" The Bhagavān replied, "Even if one does not perform the three refuges anew, because one previously went for refuge to the three, one attains all the precepts." He asked, "If one has gone for refuge in the three, but does not perform the rite of motion and proclamation, will one attain the precepts?" The Bhagavān replied, "Taking the five precepts, the eight-limbed
