'receive the complete discipline?' The Bhagavān replied: 'Although all three disciplines are indeed obtained at one time, one who has a higher devotion toward the Dharma of the Buddha will without doubt sequentially receive the five precepts first; having been subdued, once faith and devotion have arisen to a higher degree, he will receive the ten precepts after that. Having received the ten precepts, once the roots of virtue have arisen to a higher degree, if he receives the complete discipline after that, then by sequentially obtaining the taste of the Dharma of the Buddha in that way, his devotion will become firm and indestructible. For example, just as entering the great ocean means becoming gradually deeper, entering the ocean of the Buddha's Dharma is also like that; if one receives the complete discipline all at once, the sequence is lost and the deportment will also be ruined. In other cases regarding discipline, there are some beings who attain the fruit of the path by having received the five precepts. There are also some beings who attain the fruit of the path through the condition of having received the ten disciplines; thus, because causes and conditions are of various kinds, the Tathāgata taught the sequence. If one previously received the five precepts and after that received the ten precepts, then at the time of receiving the ten precepts one is endowed with both disciplines. If, after receiving the five precepts and the ten precepts, one receives the complete discipline, then at the time of receiving the complete discipline one is also endowed with all three disciplines. Among the seven ways of receiving the five precepts, the ten precepts, and the complete discipline, only the discipline involving the motion with fourfold announcement is obtained sequentially at three times. Receiving the remaining six kinds is obtained at one time; there is no sequence of three times. Regarding the three disciplines obtained at one time in that way, if at the time of returning the discipline one says: "From now on I am a śramaṇa, not a bhikṣu," then although the complete discipline is absent, the two disciplines are not absent, they exist. If, after receiving the five precepts and the ten precepts, one says: "From now on I am'
