I were to harm him and deprive him of the faculty of life, I would be desecrating the noble banner of the buddhas.' Having thought this, he remained still and did nothing. Before long, as the poison flared up, his suffering became unbearable. Again he thought of eating and biting him, but then thought: 'This would not be difficult, but if I harm him, the buddhas and noble ones will condemn it. In this world, there would be no distinction between doing good and doing evil. This one is a sinner who came to kill me, but if I do not practice patience toward him, there would be no difference between me and that sinner.
