Those people who continually seek sensual pleasure / are caught in the web of birth, aging, sickness, and death, / and are driven forth by existences in bad migrations, / like a hare running around inside a snare. / Sentient beings knotted by the noose of existence, / their minds attached to existence and sensual enjoyments, / utterly clinging to children and wives, / experience suffering again and again. / Separated from attainment and comforts, / and endowed with the contrivances of Māra, / those beings are destroyed by fears and sufferings, / like fire consuming supreme grass and leaves. / Here, one who abandons such craving, / free from attachment to craving and sensual enjoyments, / a monk who completely overcomes existence, / passes completely into nirvāṇa without remainder. / Whosoever indulges in the woman of existence, / which is difficult to abandon in this world, / their sorrow will increase, / like rain falling on grass. / Whosoever abandons this woman of existence, / which is difficult to abandon in this world, / their sorrow will roll off, / like a drop of water on a lotus. / Just as grass is pulled up for its uśīra root, / pull out existence from its root along with its base! / When a person keeps company with craving, / they wander for a very long time; / therefore, uproot craving / and there will be no sorrow and no fear! / Grasping again and again, / entering the womb again and again, / shifting and changing through states, / sentient beings wander and go. / Here, abandon that craving which is difficult to abandon / and cut off the seed; / craving will cease to be, / and one will not cycle again. / Because craving for sensory objects, which causes the ocean of existence, / is the ground of karmic fruit, / if that tormenting [force] which covers like a net of creepers / is not subdued, / this suffering will never, / in any manner, cease. / For example, if a tree is not pulled up by the roots, / it will only grow back even if cut down; / likewise, if the latent tendencies of existence are not eradicated, / this suffering will not cease again and again. / Just as oneself...
