Just as a thief, by the power of his weapon, kills oneself,
Likewise, existence arising from the inner mind
Brings slaughter to embodied beings.
Having thus recognized the fault and peril
Of sufferings arising from existence,
Abandon craving, without grasping,
And become supreme, ultimate monks!
This is the second chapter, on abandoning craving.
Carefulness is the deathless realm;
Carelessness is the realm of death.
The careful do not die,
While the careless are forever dead.
Discerning that distinction,
The wise abide in carefulness;
Greatly rejoicing in carefulness,
They delight in the sphere of the noble ones.
The steadfast, endowed with unsurpassed bliss,
Touch nirvāṇa.
When the wise person, through carefulness,
Vanquishes carelessness,
Ascending the palace of wisdom,
Sorrowless, cutting off anguish,
The steadfast from the mountain peak
Gaze down upon the fools below on earth.
Through diligence, carefulness,
Restraint, and self-control,
The wise person makes an island
And turns back the great flood.
For the diligent, mindful,
Pure in conduct, acting with discernment,
Restrained, living by the Dharma,
And careful, fame increases greatly.
Training in the sage's grounds of training:
Supreme morality, concentration, and wisdom,
Utterly tranquil and ever mindful,
The protector is free from sorrow.
Do not rely on base phenomena;
Do not rely on carelessness;
Have no longing for wrong views;
Do not enhance the worldly.
Whoever possesses the great
Right view of the worldly,
Even for a thousand lifetimes
Will not fall into the bad migrations.
Those who engage in carelessness
Are foolish and confused beings;
Just as a caravan merchant guards his wealth,
The wise should remain careful.
Do not engage in carelessness;
Turning away from desires,
Ever
