dwelling with a careful mind,
One will attain the exhaustion of the contaminants.
As long as the exhaustion of contaminants is unattained,
The wise should not be careless;
Just as a female deer [slays] a lion,
Carelessness slays [the unaware].
Whoever is careless and consorts with another’s woman
Encounter these four states:
They incur demerit, sleep uneasily,
Are blamed by the noble, and upon death are born in bad migrations.
Whoever wishes to see their own happiness
Should apply [this advice] as before.
Lest you become like a fool’s chariot,
The steadfast should not weaken diligence.
For example, when a fool's chariot
Leaves the great good path
And travels on bad roads,
Its axle breaks and its mind is afflicted;
Likewise, having abandoned the Dharma,
The fool who pursues non-Dharma
Falls under the power of the Lord of Death,
Ruined in Dharma and bereft of happiness.
Whoever completely casts aside what should be done
And does what should not be done,
Arrogant through carelessness—
Their contaminants increase.
Whoever constantly and properly cultivates
Mindfulness of the body and the like,
Does not do what should not be done,
Constantly does what should be done,
And is endowed with mindfulness and vigilance—
Their contaminants are exhausted.
Merely speaking much
Does not make one an upholder of the sublime Dharma.
Whoever here, though having heard little,
Directly realizes the mental qualities
And is careful regarding the Dharma—
They are upholders of the sublime Dharma.
Even if one recites many reasonable words,
If a careless person does not act accordingly,
Like a cowherd counting others' cattle,
He does not obtain the fortune of a recluse.
Even if one recites few reasonable words,
Yet practices the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma,
Abandoning attachment, hatred, and delusion—
Such a one obtains the fortune of a recluse.
Praising carefulness
And constantly rebuking carelessness,
Maghavān, the conqueror through carefulness,
Became the chief among the gods.
A wise person endowed with carefulness
Attains both benefits:
Whatever is the benefit of this life,
And whatever is the benefit of the next.
