All people desire the safety of life; / unlike me, who with all my soul buy a calamity.
And underlying this, I have an overarching purpose and an essential expediency. But make a firm covenant with me and
strengthen it with binding oaths, that when I yield myself as your captive, you will convey me to the presence of the king of that city
and not deliver me into the hands of another.” The hunter struck an agreement and pact on those terms. The parrot surrendered itself to the hunter,
and as a customary gift he brought it before the king of the city—who had formerly been the vizier and by sorcery and deceit had displayed ingratitude
toward his benefactor. When the king witnessed firsthand the sweetness of expression, the eloquence of speech, the sweet delivery,
and the colorful words of the parrot, he bit the finger of astonishment with his teeth. He considered meeting it
a tremendous gift and an immense blessing, not knowing that he had enticed with his own hand into his trap the bane of his life and the ruin of his hearth and home,
and had invited upon himself with a thousand wishes a household-destroying doom. Know that “God Almighty grants respite, but does not neglect.”
That unentitled stranger regarded the parrot as a confirmed means and a prepared vehicle for gaining the favor of Rūḥ-afzā,
and sent it to that curtain-dwelling recluse of the house of chastity. When Rūḥ-afzā beheld that pleasing form
and beloved countenance, the flower of joy blossomed in the garden of her heart. From listening to the stories and
parables, sweet and flowing like limpid water from its sugar-raining tongue, the fire of sorrow that flared within her breast
was extinguished: “Today the eyes of a people have found coolness and delight, which had not known rest.”
