Until one day, at a private moment, the parrot entered into speech with Rūḥ-afzā and said, “What is the cause that
the cheek like a new moon has been branded with the burden of change, and the wild-rose blossom of your cheek, which in delicacy used to strip the freshness
from moist, fresh flowers, has lost its luster and flush? The cypress of your stature, which in straightness towered above the stately cypress,
has bent like the form of a violet; and your musky forelock, which bestowed the essence of perfume upon the musk-pods of Khotan,
has become deprived of sweet fragrance like the twisted string of a harp and curled tresses. Your delicate body
in its thinness tells of the buried body of a lancet, and your world-beholding eyes, like the lane of a phlebotomist, are stained with the liver’s blood.”
Rūḥ-afzā replied, “It is clear and evident to all that in a lightless eye, a lifeless body, a fruit-bearing shoot with no fruit, and an oyster-shell without a pearl, no brilliance or adornment can be found; and for a Zulaykhā
who has cast her Joseph to the wind, or a Shīrīn cast far from Khusraw, dying appears far pleasanter than living, and from
the tree of hope the fruit of joy and delight is not obtained. Verse:
the fruit of joy and delight is not obtained from the tree of hope, verse:
