The pen is a reed and the tongue’s heart a fire-temple; / how can the pen explain the tongues of flame?
‘My grief has grown so long that I wished the nights of time / would endure forever by its side.’
The explanation of the grief of separation could not come straight on the tongue; / if I tell one hundredth of it, a hundred years are needed.
Since no one unties the knot from the affairs of my heart, / what does it open to open the secret of one’s heart?
Setting foot on the path of explaining and expounding this is beyond the measure of a hundred thousand like me, and mentioning some of it is the task
of a lifetime. If a person should wish to recount an inkling of the story, and out of the seven shoreless seas
make ink, and out of the reeds of the inhabited quarter prepare pens, and write upon the leaves of the trees until the Day of Reckoning with the utmost
speed, they still would not have written one-tenth of a tenth of it; and from the vast earth it would be a speck of dust, and from the surrounding
ocean a drop. And from hearing those life-diminishing events and grief-increasing vicissitudes, anxiety of
mind and distraction of heart would befall soul-friends, and abundant sorrow and apprehension would appear. Since by divine destiny I have become a prisoner
in the chain of calamity and captured in the snare of obstinacy, and have washed my hands of my life with the water of two eyes, why should I pointlessly
make another a partner in my suffering and pain, and make bitter the pleasant drink of the life of friends
